How to play

Khet (originally "Deflexion", now sold as "Laser Chess") is a chess-like game played with lasers. Instead of pieces taking other pieces directly, you instead maneuver your reflective pieces to guide your laser to hit other pieces in order to capture them. The goal is to hit your opponent's Pharaoh with the laser beam.

There are five types of pieces, each having different properties. Most of them move like a king in chess (one square in any direction). Most of them also have an orientation, to present a reflective side to the laser beam. You can choose to move or turn a piece 90 degrees on your turn, but not both at the same time.

The Sphinx generates the laser beam. Your Sphinx cannot move from the bottom right corner of the board, but also is invulnerable to the laser. Its only move is to turn to the left vs. up. Your Sphinx fires its beam after each of your moves.

The Pharaoh is like the chess king. It is vulnerable to the laser from all sides, and the object of the game is to hit your opponent's Pharaoh with a laser.

The two Anubis are handy to guard your Pharaoh. They are invulnerable to the laser from one direction.

The seven Pyramids are workhorse pieces to guide the laser to hit targets. They are reflective on two sides, but vulnerable to hits on the other two sides. They may be moved or rotated.

The two Scarabs are the most powerful pieces. They reflect from all sides, so are invulnerable to capture. Although most pieces can only move to empty squares, the Scarabs can also swap places with a neighboring Anubis or Pyramid of either color, though they are blocked by the Pharaoh or other Scarabs.

The board also has some squares that are restricted to one color or the other. The rightmost file containing your Sphinx can only contain your pieces, as do the leftmost corners of the board, marked in light gray. Those restricted to your opponent's pieces are dark red.

If the board position repeats three times, the game is a draw.

Interface

Click on one of your pieces to move it. The board will highlight with the available squares it can move to; click on one to complete the move. The piece's square itself will highlight if it can rotate; click on the left half to rotate counter-clockwise and the right half to rotate clockwise. Click on any other square to cancel the move.

After a move, your Sphinx's laser is automatically fired, and the laser's path is shown on the board. If the laser beam goes off-board or hits a piece safely, no change is made. If it hits a piece (white or red) where it is vulnerable, the piece will be captured.

The "Reset" button will start the game over. The "Undo" button will undo the last move. (The "Draw" button refreshes the board and the "Zap" button shows the curent reflected path of the laser for information only.)
